I am one of those who is always at my wit’s end trying to zero in on a gift for a friend. I worry too much, will she like it or not and in the earlier days I always ended up buying a scarf or perfume.
Well, I thought that’s what most girls liked, didn’t they? Not really – I mean they had preferences and I soon found out that perfumes were a very personal thing – you could never really know if the last perfume you bought would catch the fancy of your current girlfriend.
It was one of those ‘dilemma’ days when my buddy suggested poetry books. And instantly I knew this was the answer. Girls were romantic by nature and what better extension of romance than flowers and poetry. So I began my trips to the bookstore.
However, one little hitch, I didn’t really see many young girls read poetry books these days. Sure they professed their love for poetry etc. but which teen girl have you seen actually reading one of those stuff?
My buddy had an answer for this too. “You see” he said. “Girls still loved poetry but times have changed. They now prefer to listen to them.” That’s it! I had to change the books to audio books. And it made sense. Poetry was meant to be read out aloud where the person for whom it was written listened to with rapt attention. The diction, the voice modulations and the punctuations all of which only added to the beauty of the gift. So I changed track. I began my visits to online sites that sold audio books on poetry.
The best thing about poetry books or audio poetry books is that you can get something that is slanted towards someone’s interest. There are different types of poetry, and there are different styles of writing. You simply have to select a few poetry audio books and listen to them to understand what I mean. Some people may like long and winding poetry, while others may like lighter prose that is easy and simple. It really depends on the personality of your friend. You don’t even have to go into a bookstore to find the right audio poetry books for friends and family.
There are many places online where you can look, and many of these offer reviews of the audio book from people who have previously purchased that audio book. Amazon is a great place for this, and you can find used versions if you want to buy some for yourself.
You can also find poetry books online that are self-published. This means that authors have published the book on their own, and it is probably not available anywhere else. You might find some really great stuff this way. If you want audio poetry books for yourself, the field is wide open. You can find them online or in a bookstore, but you can also go to a thrift store and go through their selection of books, or find a used bookstore. You can borrow from friends, or from the library. If you aren’t sure you will like something, check it out at the library. If something catches your fancy, set out to purchase the audio version, if not, let it go.
